Plus, have some supervised light up time (palm candles or prop of your choice). This will give you a good solid start to working with this element.

On this armchair tour, you’ll sample some of the experiences of most interest to dancers. Vicariously enjoy a night out with live music; reenact a henna night (pre-wedding) ritual; discover the significance of hammams (bathhouses). Learn about regional costumes and music, and watch one or two folk dances.
BYO tea or coffee (available to purchase at the club) – both of which have prominent cultural roles. Turkish delight provided!
About Your Facilitator: With her wealth of knowledge and a teaching journey spanning thousands of classes over 2 decades, Rachel is recognised throughout Australia’s bellydance community for her expertise. Rachel’s passion for the art form and dedication to honouring its cultural origins shine through in every class. Although Turkish music and dance hasn’t been the focus of her work, it probably hasn’t for most dancers here in Australia, as most of us come from the same Egyptian / Lebanese teaching heritage. That allowed Rachel to offer a compare / contrast of the most different aspects. Her trip to Turkiye last year was not intended to be a study trip, but she couldn’t help following the strains of music wherever she came across it. This led to plenty of fascinating interactions with locals.

I Dance, Therefore I Am with Isabel
Session Type: Presentation
Date/Time: Saturday, 11:45am-12:45pm
Description: Of course you love dancing. We get out and get amongst it as dancers and as audience. We do it alone and with our friends and families, we do it at parties, in classes, at festivals, and on stage. It is who we are. But did you know that a nexus between identity and dance is recognised in the UNESCO Convention of Intangible Cultural Heritage? This presentation is a glimpse into dance as a marker of cultural identity for individuals and groups, and a tool in cultural development. It opens a discussion about personal practice and a sense of belonging (or not) to community.
About Your Facilitator: While working in curatorial practice, I was intrigued by the structure processes by which artwork and other cultural material was collected and exhibited. I noted that it was not unusual for the artists and their communities to be written out of the story, that attention to the object detracted from the maker. Can dancers be separated from their performances so readily? What social factors enmesh a dance/r with a community? These questions are at the heart of this presentation.
Rhythm and Motion - Breaking Out of the Beginner-Drummers Mould with Michael West
Session Type: Music
Date/Time: Saturday, 11:45am-12:45pm

Each lesson focuses on movement that boosts sound and speed, combining foundational rhythms, accents, and creative fills. Get ready for a confident, resonant stage presence that celebrates the joy of music.
About Your Facilitator: Michael has been practicing and performing with his little drum since 2001 at festivals and dancey-dance events, accompanying solo and troupe dancers or band members. It’s never a dull hour of drumming and idle banter with Michael. He aims to prepare students to play on stage with a confident sound, embracing mistakes as part of the musician’s journey. Otherwise Michael makes daily attempts at being a mechanical engineer, and trains in Kendo.
